Afghan Darbar on Broadway Avenue is excellent — authentic Afghan halal food including kebabs, mantu, and rice dishes. Very popular with locals and Massey students. Reasonably priced.

Can confirm Afghan Darbar is great. Their lamb kebabs and qabili palau are the best in Palmy. Open for lunch and dinner, closed Mondays.

Yes! Try Baobab Cafe for African/halal food, Indian Aroma on Victoria Street, and the kebab shops around the CBD. Hamilton has a growing halal food scene. Also check restaurants along Grey Street and Anglesea Street.

Mainland cheddar and edam use microbial rennet and are halal-suitable. Anchor cream cheese is also fine. Fonterra brands (Mainland, Anchor, Kapiti) generally use non-animal rennet — check the ingredient list for "microbial rennet". Bega and Kraft slices are halal-certified. Look for the FIANZ halal logo on packaging. Pak'nSave and Countdown stock all of these.

Tip: look for the FIANZ halal logo on packaging. Also the NZ Muslim community Facebook groups maintain updated lists of halal products available in supermarkets.
