NZ is generally very safe — ranks top 5 globally for peace. Violent crime is rare. Main concerns: car break-ins (don't leave valuables visible), property crime in some areas, and driving on the left (if you're from a right-hand drive country). Natural hazards: earthquakes (especially Wellington/Christchurch), occasional flooding. Download the NZ ShakeOut app. 111 is the emergency number. Police are generally approachable and unarmed. Biggest real risk for newcomers is underestimating the UV — NZ sun is harsh, always wear sunscreen.
