Honest answer: you probably need a car outside Auckland/Wellington CBD. Auckland has trains (Western, Southern, Eastern lines) and buses but coverage is patchy. Wellington has good buses and trains within the metro area. Christchurch is bus-only but cycling is excellent. Everywhere else: car is essential. AT HOP card for Auckland ($5 deposit), Snapper card for Wellington. NZ driving is on the LEFT. Speed limits: 50km/h urban, 100km/h rural. Getting a used car: check trademe.co.nz, expect $5,000-15,000 for a reliable Japanese import.
