How does the healthcare system work in New Zealand? Do I need insurance?

NZ has a public healthcare system. GP visits cost $55-80 for adults (cheaper with Community Services Card). Under-14s get free GP visits. Hospital emergency is free for residents. Prescriptions are $5 each. Register with a GP early โ some have waiting lists. If you are on a work visa for 2+ years, you get the same public healthcare as residents. Private insurance is optional but recommended for dental, optical, and specialist wait times. Southern Cross is the largest NZ health insurer.
