NZ has strict biosecurity. Dogs and cats CAN be imported but require: microchip, rabies vaccination, blood test, import permit from MPI, and 10 days in NZ quarantine facility. Process takes 6+ months and costs $2,000-5,000. Only certain countries are approved (Australia is easiest โ no quarantine). Cats from most countries need 10 days quarantine. Some dog breeds are banned (Pit Bull, Dogo Argentino, Brazilian Fila, Japanese Tosa). Birds, reptiles, and exotic pets are generally prohibited. See mpi.govt.nz for full requirements.
