Te Manawa museum is great for families. The Esplanade gardens and playground are beautiful. Victoria Esplanade has a miniature railway. Massey University campus is worth a walk. For day trips: Manawatu Gorge walk, Tararua Forest Park, and the wind farm at Te Apiti. The Square has good cafes and weekend markets.

For halal in Wellington: try the Middle Eastern and Turkish restaurants on Courtenay Place and Cuba Street. In Kilbirnie: Istanbul Kebab on Onepu Road. In Newtown: several halal eateries along Riddiford Street and Adelaide Road. Baobab Cafe at 152 Riddiford Street, Newtown (4.3 stars, 827 reviews) is excellent for African halal food. Hasan Supermarket on Adelaide Road for halal groceries.
